Cypriot voting for president "running smoothly"

Nicosia, Feb 4 (BNA): Cypriot eligible voters started early on Sunday heading to the polls in the second and last round of elections for choosing the island country's eighth president.


The official Cyprus News Agency (CNA) said 550,876 Cypriots are eligible to cast ballots on and outside the island, with competition between the incumbent president Nicos Anastasiades and the independent hopeful, Satavros Malas.
Anastasiades is backed by the ruling Democratic Rally (DISY) party and Malas by the main opposition AKEL party.
In the first round of balloting, held last Sunday, Anastasiades won 35.5 percent of the votes and his contender took 30.3 percent. The new president will serve until 2023, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported.
CNA quoted Chief Returning Officer Kypros Kyprianou as saying that voting is running smoothly and everything is generally calm and orderly in the presidential elections.
According to the news agency, Voting will continue until noon and will recommence at 1 pm, after an hour’s break, until 6 pm.
More than 2,000 police officers have been deployed in Cyprus in order to ensure the success of the operation.
